Surgery in progress (Credit: Fadhley)
Meet Modupe Ozolua. She introduced Nigerians to cosmetic surgery through her Body Enhancement company. When Modupe started the company in 2001, she was greeted with a lot of skepticism. But over time, she proved that many Nigerians who other wise would have walked the streets feeling unhappy with themselves, could be given a new lease of life with either cosmetic or reconstructive surgery.
Modupe has had her moments of challenges. In 2001, cosmetic surgery was a very unique concept in Nigeria and most people did not take her work seriously, more so because of her non-medical background. Nigerians were known for doing plastic reconstructive surgery, but Modupe didn’t know anybody who was doing plastic cosmetic surgery. Most people didn’t know anything about cosmetic surgery, except for a few elite Nigerians who would go out of the country to have it done.
But now after six years of operation in Nigeria, cosmetic surgery is becoming more acceptable with people and Modupe is planning to introduce non-surgical laser beauty treatment in addition to the list of non-invasive services for both men and women. She wants to provide Nigerians with the newest technology in the field of cosmetic surgery and meet the fast changing needs in medicine.
